With apologies to the Beach Boys:

Catch the Toons, 'cause they're headin' on out to the beach!

This im-age here is tit-led "Beauty and the Beach"
(catch a Toon, catch a Toon)
With a song a-bout it, than a speech
        (ooh-waa ooh-waa ooh-waa ooh-waa)
You've got Belle there, with her hat and books
And baby, that one-piece suit will at-tract men's looks
So come and--catch the Toons, 'cause they're headin' on out to the beach!

Bob Ito asked about the Beast, "Hey, Am-ber-le
(catch a Toon, catch a Toon)
On him, what would you like to see?"
        (ooh-waa ooh-waa ooh-waa ooh-wah)
"A surfer boy, Beast should Speedos wear!
Re-mem-ber! Those shorts are tight, there should be SOMETHING there!" ;-D
And so he--drew the Toons, who are headin' on out to the beach!

They'll spend the day and eat their pic-nic lunch and then
(catch a Toon, catch a Toon)
He's got his 'board--surf's up again!
        (ooh-waa ooh-waa ooh-waa ooh-wah)
So if this sounds like a good download
Then netter, just save this post, and u-u-de-code
And then you'll--catch the Toons, 'cause they're headin' on out to the beach!
--Amberle Ferrian <amberle@[...]>, "Catch a Toon"; sung to the tune of "Catch a Wave", arranged by Brian Wilson, performed by the Beach Boys

Those of you who read the April '94 issue of rec.arts.disney's own online humor magazine, DIS' 'n' DAT (edited by lar3ry gensch, <lar3ry@[...]>) may have noted that longtime r.a.d net.resident Tim Pickett <quetzal@[...]> turned 21 today, 1 May. And those of you familiar with Tim know that he has an abnormal attraction to a certain redheaded mermaid from a certain Disney animated movie.

In light of these facts, the Bucketeer Bodyguard Brigade and I, longtime "opponents" of Tim in the infamous r.a.d Water Wars, decided that Tim's birthday would really be special if we could find and introduce Ariel herself to him. After all, Tim has been a brave and chivalrous "foe", and he certainly merits our respect. :-) The only problem, of course, was getting Ariel to Tim. As a mermaid, she can't exactly walk up to his door and knock. And we wanted it to be a surprise, too. So we managed to smuggle her into a giant birthday cake. Unfortunately, it was a little too big to ship out of the country, so we had to remove one dimension from it before we could send it....

This is a scan of a handmade birthday card drawn by Bob and signed by him, David Cuthbert, David Uy, Jeff Wilson and myself, and distributed with Tim's permission. The image is divided into four sections as follows:

Upper left: Front cover
Upper right: Inside of card
Lower left: Envelope, also custom-drawn
Lower right: Bottom part of the back of the card

Tim's address and all personal messages to him have been deleted, since you don't need to see that.

Bob would also like to say that he's not entirely happy with the way Ariel turned out here, but unfortunately we were in a hurry. Bob drew the card a month before Tim's birthday, and while that may seem like a lot of time, bear in mind that we all had to sign it, so the card had to literally circle the United States before it could go overseas to Tim. Fortunately, he got it just in time.

Happy Birthday, Tim!

Those of you familiar with Bob's drawings know that he likes to create "what if" scenes with his favorite Disney characters. What if Belle was born a mermaid? ("Belle as Mermaid", bellemer.gif) What if Belle had posed for the Mona Lisa? ("Mona Belle", monabelle.gif) What would Belle and the Beast look like on their honeymoon in Hawaii? ("Beauty and the Beach", batbeach.gif) This drawing continues that tradition. Suppose Beast had learned when Belle's birthday was, before he gave her his library? Here, we see what a hypothetical scene from the movie might be like had this occurred...

This is a scan of a handmade birthday card drawn by Bob; signed by him, David Cuthbert, David Uy, and Jeff Wilson; and sent to me, Amberle Ferrian. (I turned 26 on 7 May.) The image is divided into four sections:

Left: front cover
Right, top: inside left flap (the card was arranged like a looseleaf notebook portfolio)
Right, center: inside right flap (blank--personal message in "banner" deleted)
Right, bottom: lower half of back cover

Personal messages have been deleted, as with all "Bucketland Cards" images.

Thanks very much, guys! That was really sweet of you! <blush :->

One of the more endearing scenes in Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST occurs when Beast is preparing for his formal date with Belle, just before the breathtaking ballroom dance. Who could forget his nervous banter with Lumiere as he makes himself presentable to the woman to whom he has given his heart? But Lumiere is not the only person (well, object :-) working hard to make this a special night for the couple. This drawing depicts what we might have seen had Belle been the focus of this scene. And as she prepares for a wonderful evening, another of the Enchanted Objects assists while looking on with love and hope.

"... If he could learn to finish his experiments and his dissertation before his 21st semester, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to stay a grad student for all time..."

Ask near any grad student what it's like, and he or she will probably tell you that it's not dissimilar to what Disney's Beast (as in BEAUTY AND THE...) went through. After four years of college, you could have had any job you desired (neglecting things like recessions for the moment :-), but you were masochistic, brain-dead, and unwise. Then one day, a haggard professor came up to you and offered you a singular stipend in return for shelter from the Real World (tm). But when you sneered at the offer, and turned to other thoughts, the professor melted away to reveal a powerful advisor. And as punishment, you were transformed to a lab with a hideous amount of work, and a powerful spell was placed upon you from the minute you enrolled. Ashamed of your meager wages, you concealed yourself in academia, with your office window your only mirror to the outside world....

:-)

...But, like the Beast, some grad students eventually break their spells as the years pass, and graduate! And so it was for rec.arts.disney's Future Disney Cabinet (FDC) walkaround Beast, Jeff Wilson <jdwilson@[...]>, who successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation in theoretical chemistry on 11 May 1994. And in recognition of this achievement, a number of his net. peers on r.a.d have gotten together to take a "picture" of Beast at his commencement ceremony, in full academic regalia, with Belle proudly adjusting his doctoral hood.

This is a scan of a handmade graduation card drawn by Bob Ito and signed by him and three other r.a.d net.residents: David Cuthbert, David Uy, and myself. The image is divided into four parts as follows:

upper left: front cover of card
upper right: inside right of card
lower left: envelope, also custom-drawn
lower right: lower region on card back

As with all "Bucketland Cards" images, addresses and personal messages have been deleted.

Congratulations, DOCTOR Jeffrey David Wilson! (Or is that "Dr. Beast"? :-)
