_A Mermaid_ (Pl.55) is one of his most delicate conceptions, and understandably he has lingered long in bringing it to perfection....The mermaid combs her hair while the small waves turn endlessly behind her on the sea-margin and the massive rocks. As always, Waterhouse is able to capture the natural moment of stillness; the comb pressed to the end of the auburn tress, the parted lips and dreaming eyes speaking of thoughts far away... --Anthony Hobson, J.
