DIS' 'n' DAT WireNews Articles

DIS' 'n' DAT WireNews are articles "Special to DIS' 'n' DAT" and are posted to rec.arts.disney (r.a.d.) on a random basis. Although they are not officially part of the DIS' 'n' DAT newsletters, the editor/publisher thought that they were surely worthy of archiving.

At least one of these articles generated follow-ups in the form of other pseudo-news announcements. Since the follow-ups were not presented as WireNews articles, they have been excluded from this archive.

DIS' 'n' DAT Submission Policies

A letter from the editor...

Somebody has emailed me a query about writing DIS' 'n' DAT articles and I started to write an answer. However, I decided that this answer might have a larger audience than one. I have decided as a public service to present them to all on rec.arts.disney (r.a.d.), in the unlikely event that you are a lurking aspiring contributor. Note that this is one of the few "top ten" lists that are not in descending order:

[Drum Roll... in the background we hear the ONE... TWO... THREE... FOUR... GIVE IT UP... TWO... THREE... FOUR! of Colonel Hathi's march...]

Official DIS' 'n' DAT Newsletter Article Policies and Guidelines, as made up by lar3ry gensch at the spur of the moment when he should have been at a Christmas party...

  1. DIS' 'n' DAT exists in its own universe. There may be some parallels between the Disney company that exists in this universe and that of the real world. These are known as "coincidences" and can be safely ignored.
  2. Character assasinations are unfortunate, but usually very funny. However, don't get too obscure. The most obscure reference that I have made in DIS' 'n' DAT was a question asking the name of the owl that Walt stomped to death. Most people read the question a few times, shrugged their shoulders, and ignored it. [Note that I just make up these guidelines; I never claimed to follow them.]
  3. There must be a mention of Sparky somewhere in the newsletter (in case you don't know, "Sparky" is Jeffrey Katzenberg). [Note: I stole this very nice policy from SPY magazine.]
  4. Referring to The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim as "untalented guys" (quote from the January 1994 DIS' 'n' DAT) can be hazardous to your health. Any such reference will be edited to include the name, electronic mail, and home address of the writer (unless that writer is me, in which case it will be anonymous).
  5. Never, EVER, mention the name of a song that you are parodying. It spoils the mood. Instead, mention the ambience in which the song is presented, or ask Tim Pickett to give you Laser Disk index codes.
  6. There is NO policy #6. [Note: I stole this policy from Monty Python's Flying Circus. I never said that these were very original, either.]
  7. Hidden Mickey Trivia Contests never get any entries, and are basically used to tell the readership to stop reading... the newsletter is over. If they don't get the hint, they'll start reading the back matter, which is a fate worse than death.
  8. Keep references to Tokyo Disneyland to a minimum. There is no real reason for this policy, but it sounds sort of pro-American, and just might get me a date with Hillary Clinton. [Hey, what's good for Bill...]
  9. Try not to be real smug about some trivia that you know about the Disney organization. You are usually wrong and it will only cause Robert Cook to lambaste^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hcorrect you in public.
  10. If you mention any "real" (non-Disney) person, such as a regular on r.a.d., it is usually a good idea to preview the article or reference with that person [avoid flamage].

In all, I tend to ignore all but the last policy mentioned. Feel free, if you are contributing, to ignore any or all that you wish.

Here's hoping for more DIS' 'n' DAT contributors in the new year...

And a sincere DIS' 'n' DAT"Thank You" to this year's contributors:

And... last, but not least, the readers of DIS' 'n' DAT on r.a.d., the people on the two mailing lists, the archive maintainers (Jennifer and Tim), and the employees of that certain Disney Store to which I secretly donate a printed copy.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND (hic!) A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

[Addendum -- Written 24 July 1995]

If you REALLY want some policies, here they are:

  1. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE!
What little audience there is for DIS' 'n' DAT is interested in Disney stuff. That includes animation, films, parks, company officials, rec.arts.disney, and the FDC. If you have something that contains a lot of inside jokes about rec.arts.disney, you will lose some of your audience. Similarly, if you have something that contains stuff that would only be understood by members of FDCMuck, you will lose a great many more of your audience. Normally, I have no problem with rec.arts.disney stuff, but FDCMuck related stuff might be better served if it were left there.
  2. KEEP IT G-RATED OR (at least) PG-RATED
Remember, there are teens and pre-teens that enjoy Disney as well as adults. They really shouldn't be excluded from the enjoyment of this wonderful publication.
  3. MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL: HAVE FUN!
This is the reason why the newsletter is here... so we can all have fun together at the expense of a multi-billion dollar corporation.
